I am Kendra Crossen Burroughs, an American Baba-lover since 1968. My lifelong profession has been as a book editor, and I have also published some of my own writing, including an annotated book on the Bhagavad Gita and one on selections from the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. After publishing articles and reviews in the Glow International and the Love Street LampPost, I began my “Kendra’s Notebook” blog to gather some of my old and new writings about Meher Baba, including introductory articles on Baba and accounts of local events in Myrtle Beach. At many programs held at Meher Center in Myrtle Beach, I took notes and then wrote up a summary of the talk (or video of a talk) for those who could not be there. These are on my blog and include talks by Filis Frederick, Lud Dimpfl, Jangu Irani (Mehera’s nephew), Stella and Ralph Hernandez, Don Stevens, Jimmy Khan, Charles Haynes, Esfandiar Vesali, and others. I also feature the work of Baba artists such as Balagopala, Diana Le Page, Marla Faith, and Vicente Herrero Heca. My most popular article, according to what people tell me they like, is called “Say Goodbye to Worry” and describes my preference for determinism over free will. Recently I posted my first little video, a short clip of Phyllis Ott taken in my kitchen. I look forward to devoting more time to writing my personal thoughts about Meher Baba as well as sharing the words and images of others.

I love music and writing: I run music programs for seniors and music programs for children. I’ve made some CDs and tapes of my music. Some of my prose and poetry are on the Writing Page for you to look at too. Also, I am deeply inspired and guided by Meher Baba, . . .

His style is instantly recognisable – simple, uncluttered compositions and an overall sense of peace and stillness borne out of his deep love of the land. His images have been used in countless books, calendars, magazines, on BBC TV, in a Hollywood Movie, billboards, brochures, catalogues, greeting cards, posters, postcards, websites, national newspapers, fleets of vans and much more. Tony visited Meherabad and took a number of wonderful photographs on Samadhi and the Mandali, and some of them are available on his site for free download as wallpaper..

It turned out that a number of relatives and friends who were not Baba lovers liked the book very much and the lack of knowledge regarding Baba’s Life or ‘Cosmology’ didn’t seem to matter. This was a lovely surprise! For those readers who might want to know more about Baba, I’d like to recommend this unusual, amazing web site” ..

For many people, sometime after they reach fifty years of age, the reality of their mortality takes tangible shape. Today, Sunday 12 June 2005, in my fifty-seventh year (whilst the Australian Anniversary of Baba’s visit is in full swing), I’ve finally decided I will leave something behind. I hope and pray that someone out there is inspired to love and remember Him a little bit more and repeat His Name, still yet more. I hope there are teentsy-weentsy flecks of His Glory leaping up and off, at least some of these pages. NON-AUSTRALIAN READERS: As an expatriate American, I trust the colloquialisms, slang and unique ‘Aussie’ ways of expression won’t be a stumbling block to understanding and enjoyment; since ‘Baba’s poet’, Francis Brabazon, has paved the way. I’ve added a few footnotes for non-Australian readers but I’ve lost track of which expressions would be known or used, in America or England. Australia, like England, has an amazingly vast arsenal of slang, colloquialisms and idioms. One example of a word that I struggled over, trying to imagine if there was any way Americans would know this word – it’s tucker. Tucker=food (now I don’t have to put in footnotes for tucker). I’ve included many ‘non-Baba’ poems because I like them and feel they are some of my best. Most of the ‘work poems’ were written during the first ten or eleven years in Australia, and my business was outdoor work: rubbish removal, gardening, land clearing, tree pruning etc. Later, the work poems were written while driving taxis or jobs I’ve had delivering food supplies. ….

All my life I had been searching for that inner One I now know as Meher Baba. I searched through religions and churches, meditation and mysticism and devoured new age teachings. In the churches I searched for the ‘real’ Lord Jesus I knew existed and through mediation got a bit closer by moving inside myself to find Him. The new age therapies and teachings expanded my consciousness in wonderful ways.

I explored the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual make-up of myself as far as I could. I found many inner aspects that needed healing and attended workshops and courses to achieve this. My intuition grew and developed. It was on one of these courses that the Master first came to me. This was a complete surprise to me. He did not give me His name, but was very beautiful. … On my first visit to the Samadhi of Meher Baba I noticed that love offerings were made of flowers and garlands. I had a desire one day to offer a garland myself but could not see where they were obtained from. I stood empty handed in a short queue to enter His sacred shrine
I had not mentioned this wish to anyone. After a short while an unknown woman came up to me with a garland saying “you need this please have it”. With thanks to her and to the ‘all knowing’ of Meher Baba I was able to offer a lovely garland.

Meher Baba composed a special prayer and silently participated many times when it was being said before Him. He said that He gave such power to this prayer that anyone who said it would be benefitted and that He is actually present when it is being said.At the time of the following story I had no knowledge of the above but noticed that at 7.00a.m. and 7.00p.m. this prayer was said at His tomb shrine along with other devotional songs for 45 minutes. I was not interested in this prayer as it reminded me of my school days and the formality of ‘having to say’ the Lord’s Prayer. I disassociated myself from it. There is and was no compulsion to attend this time of prayer at His shrine.

This site is mostly dedicated to elucidating on the subject of gnosis (literally: true knowledge, or dnyana -Vedanta, or irfan -Sufi), as imparted by Meher Baba. Traditionally such issues are considered “esoteric”. Meher Baba, however, has worked to open the most essential part of this knowledge to the whole world. So, although a limited number of people are inclined to follow the path of knowledge as part of their spiritual journey, the issues of this site can be considered as “exoteric”, in the sense that they are openly available, intellectually at least, to everyone. Gnosis, however, is beyond the reach of the intellect and is available only by direct experience of the various stages of the spiritual Path and ultimately of the Self.

My natural tendency is toward love for all creatures to begin with. I probably feel greater guilt over slapping a mosquito than many people, and Baba even said that killing mosquitos was OK, though given that was in India, it probably had more to do with halting the spread of disease. The mosquitos here don’t carry disease — or at least they didn’t before the Avian flu reached here — so I try to brush them away rather than kill them. Our house, however, often gets overrun by mice. We have chickens, dogs, a rabbit, and a parrot, (named Pegu after Baba’s cat), so there is a lot of food that attracts mice. Mice live under the shed and under the house. I strongly suspect mice live somewhere in the house, but I haven’t found their location….

…. The mice here have become almost tame, to the extent that they peer at me from the kitchen counter or from the lumber pile as if they expect me to feed them a little tidbit.

For the most part, I try to use live traps, and then I bicycle them down to the arroyo and release them. I read somewhere on the internet that doing so is stupid. House mice are house mice, and if you release them in the wild, they are going to be eaten by something or otherwise die some other wilderness related death.

But many times, they just don’t seem lured by the live traps. I have a feeling the captured mice must release some panic pheromone in the live traps that warn other mice off.

Every morning, I have to get up and sweep the mice droppings off the kitchen counters, and then I wipe them down with a bleach-based cleaner. Last year, (the issue is worse in the winter), I got so sick of cleaning the counter, I resorted to the traditional, smash-the-mouse-with-a-steel-wire trap. To me, it was horrible. It did, however, quickly take care of the problem, at least to the extent that there were not that many droppings, and I no longer heard the mice chewing in the walls. . . .

Together with Meher Baba’s book “God Speaks”, these two books comprise the main body of Meher Baba’s spiritual cosmology.

There is an Infinite and Shoreless Ocean which is eternally calm and still. That Ocean is the Ocean of Knowledge. The Ocean has Knowledge, but It is unaware that It contains Knowledge.

For countless aeons Infinite Unconsciousness was the only state of Everything. Yet in the Everything (which includes the Nothing), were included Infinite Energy and Infinite Space. And even though these two didn’t exist differentiated from each other, there was friction between them. So within the Deep Sleep of the Ocean, an unease was building up over the countless aeons. This is the unease the Mischievous Chicken was feeling while under the wings of the Hen. This unease can also be described as an unconscious-yet question forming in Infinite Unconsciousness: “Who Am I?” At one point, this building up caused movement. Yet this movement didn’t interrupt the calm and still state of Everything. It was a movement that happened in Nothing. It was the movement as the Mischievous Chicken first pushed aside the wings of the Hen to venture out. This movement resulted in Tej, the original fire of pure white light. But even this was before the Dream of Creation started. It was as if the seed of Imagination was born in the Nothing. It was only when the Nothing became aware of its Ignorance as to “Who Am I?”, that the Creation Point was established, through which this original fire issued forth in Creation. And during the next attempts of the Mischievous Chicken to escape from under the wings of the Hen, various qualities (colors) were abstracted from this fire.

From the differentiation of these qualities of the the original unified fire, came the elements that made the Dream possible. So the seed of Imagination, germinated into a world of energy, a world of subtle gases. And as the Mischievous One ventured for the last time out from Infinite Unconsciousness, it crossed these gaseous levels quite unaware of anything but a light with no color (darkness), which was the background of the Dream it was about to start dreaming. It was against this dark background that it felt hungry. And it was its surrounding subtle gases, which it had been unaware of, that condensed and offered themselves as the food to quench its hunger. And as it ate, it became part of the Dream. It ate the most condensed gas and it dreamt a very first and most abstract dream-form of being Hydrogen. But as almost no consciousness came out of this dream, it kept going. And in its forward march, nebulae turned to protogalaxies and stars that exploded to form denser elements and other events that it barely even noticed; because its only consciousness didn’t exceed the intelligence of such elements, which isn’t much, or can hardly be said to exist at all. But later, as it kept going, there were more complicated forms to dream through. So, further on it started having experience of some qualities like heat, visible light, solid or fluid surroundings, pleasure, pain, food it could chase all by itself, other entities that would chase it as food, fear, places it would be safe in, and finally it came to a most developed form in which it could even think and reason and build tools to make its Dream more comfortable. But then again, in this perfected form, it also started making things very complicated for itself.

So the Dream became increasingly interesting but also increasingly frustrating. In all this time, the original Ocean of Knowledge remained as calm and still as ever. All these events in Nothing, didn’t ever stir a thing in Everything. But when the Mischievous Chicken finally stopped indulging in the Dream and found out about it being just a dream and turned within and realized itself to be the very Ocean of Everything, a new state of the Ocean was born: Infinite Consciousness. But since Eternity knows no lapse of time outside Nothing’s imaginings, it can be said that as the original question “Who Am I?” was expressed, the answer “I Am Everything” (or according to another terminology “I Am God”) came simultaneously with the question. The Dream’s inner sense of time is irrelevant for Eternity. But it is only thanks to this Dream of Creation that out of Infinite Unconsciousness arises Infinite Consciousness.

(Some Phrases are from The Nothing And The Everything, Bhau Kalchuri)
